HomeGrown is a story about love, and familial care. It follows the journey of an old man and a terrapin who meet by chance and find a family in each other. With time however, they discover that all things must grow and come to an end.

Scored for solo gaohu, erhu and zhonghu, accompanied by strings, woodwinds, piano and yangqin.

The score of HomeGrown charts the life of our two main characters - the old man and the terrapin - as they first meet and eventually live and grow together. From emotional cues to a light and fun ‘family adventure’ cue depicting their life together (adapted for the credits as well, as heard in this sample here), three Chinese fiddles - the gaohu, erhu and zhonghu - were chosen to be the lead instruments. This choice of instruments was for their expressive and versatile colours, and was also due to the humourous fact that they are commonly considered instruments for ‘old people’ in Singapore.
